SO (Supporting Organization)

A Supporting Organization (SO) may be an attractive alternative to a Private Foundation or a Donor Advised Fund at a Community Foundation. It is a charitable entity designed to support certain other charitable organizations designated in the founding instrument. The SO provides the donor with a measure of control that is generally greater than that afforded by a Donor Advised Fund but less than a Private Foundation. There are three types of SOs described in the tax code.
